Countries don’t exist. There are no borders. Countries have no opinion, no stance, no aim, because countries don’t exist. It is all an abstract idea, where imaginary lines are drawn in the sand and declared states. The only views and opinions are of those inside a country, the men and women of said country. For men are not countries, men are men, born to think free.
With this said, I will explain why nationalism is the greatest cancer known to humanity. A naïve, egotistical pride in your country, as if it’s actions reflect your own. As if the battle you won, or the country you saved or defeated, is your actions merely because you were born there. Wake up; you are not your country. You are you.
Nationalism has caused fights and arguments, and has led to much bloodshed. It has caused hatred, and fascism.
It is a wholly unpleasant, sickening tumour on civilization. A belief that you, the fat, useless person you are is better than other fat, useless people because you were born in a different country. A man’s life is not judged by his nation, but by his actions. To connect the actions of a nation to the quality of an individual is insane.
Yes, there has been a rise in Islamic terror, but nationalism is not the answer.
Across the nation of Germany, with its infamy in the past, the fascist movement rises again. In Poland, the already thuggish culture turns against immigrants. And in Britain, with the rise of anti-immigration parties, pro-English nationalists band together in groups like the BNP or its splinter cousin Britain First, echoing the nation’s history of the National Front and skinhead culture of the 80s. Not just Europe, down in Oceania, the once ‘land of opportunity’ Australia tells outsiders to go home to where they came from.
Nationalism corrupts us as a species. It makes us look back and realise that we’re petty creatures who must cling to false ideals, so long as they feel that said ideal makes them better. I say, forget country. Forget ethnicity or race or gender, religion or even sexuality, and focus on the person in question. And for the love of God, don’t credit yourself for the work of the people born 200 years before you.
It’s not a unique message, but it’s a timeless one. So maybe try following it. Now don’t rise as men of Russia, men of Britain, men of the Americas, men of Europe, rise as men of the Earth.
